In times past, a life's work was passed from generation to generation through one's surname: Miller, Cook, Smith, Taylor. If such were the case today, the name "Collier" would be synonymous with "artist." Growing up in the Collier household was in itself an apprenticeship in the arts, and from their father, Carroll, each of the Collier children learned to observe the world around them ...to see in the most artistic sense of the verb.

Today, art continues to be a family affair. Four of Carroll and Mildred's six children have embraced creative careers. John, the oldest, and Grant, the youngest are following in their father's footsteps as professional artists; the middle sons, Steve and Tom channeled their creative talents into architectural design. Mildred, too, has become quite an accomplished painter herself since all the kids left home, and several granddaughters are showing great promise.

This fall, John and Grant will join their father for an extraordinary exhibit which will kick off our fall season. Collier & Sons will bring together for the first time the artistic accomplishments of the three Colliers. At first glance their creative expression seems to have taken diverse paths; but, study John's more symbolic paintings or Grant's portraits and digital images, and one realizes that like their father, both are "intensely perceptive" and see "beauty in the physical world and draw passion from the invisible one."

With a twinkle in his voice, Carroll Collier agrees that like his own work, John and Grant's is poetic in nature. "John has learned to use his conceptual ability to great advantage, sometimes shocking, but always deep and moving. Grant feels deeply and has immense talent to express himself. It is exciting to see his flowering." Join us on September 29 as we applaud the Collier family legacy in the making and present new work by father and sons.
